Abbot Kinney founded Venice, which was originally called “Venice of America, in 1905 as a beach resort city. After the founders passed away and with the Great Depression, the city started to deteriorate. By the 1950s, artists, poets, and writers started moving here because of the low rent. Hence, this transformed Venice to the center of the Beat generation in the 1950s and 60s. The area has revitalized, but it is still more affordable than nearby beach cities, such as Santa Monica and is still known for the creative and unique culture. Today, Venice is a vibrant area with a traditional towards progressive social change. Venice also has an acclaimed surf area, called The Venice Breakwater. The culture, along with the beautiful beaches and surfing areas has attracted celebrities to buy homes here, such as Julia Roberts, Kate Beckinsale, and Anjelica Huston, and Nicolas Cage.
